Beyond the Mountains of Madness
Graduate Assistant to Willard Griffith
Charlie Porter is almost unique in this era, a graduate student of middle age who is able to pay cash while studying full time. Porter jumped at the chance to do research in the Antarctic. Although quiet and erudite, Porter was once a miner and pit foreman in California, and is significantly more knowledgeable about practical geology than Griffith. He never brings this up. Though now a man of some means, Porter’s thick hands betray the fact that he has not always been prosperous, nor an academic.
